Do You Know This Person?

As a child she always felt different. She felt like others could understand things that really didn’t make that much sense to her. Yet, she just seemed to know things that others had no idea about. She also felt things that other people didn’t seem to feel.

These feelings were often so big they felt like they might just explode out of her or cause her to fall apart. Instead of acknowledgement and support she was often told to ‘pick up her bottom lip’ or was sent to her room when her big feelings burst, unrestrained, out of her.

Strangely, she felt the most alive when her anger pushed through but she quickly learned that was not OK.

No matter how much she tried to understand the rules and how hard she relentlessly strived to do everything well and ‘just right’, she felt like she was different, did not quite belong and was just not enough.

Strangely, another part of her actually didn’t want to fit in and be enough. This part could feel how she died a little inside when she did try to fit herself into the boxes. This part could taste the value of freedom even though the risk of being untamed was just so high.

This desire to fit in while resisting being boxed in was just one contradiction she lived. She lived many other contradictions too, like deeply valuing close connections but not trusting people. With a thin skin and a big heart, it was just better to keep them all at arms length despite craving more connection and attention.

She carried an intensity of energy and was never still but she was always more tired than her friends, and restorative downtime was a non-negotiable that she constantly shirked because that would make her ‘lazy’ and different.

Her head never stopped. Ever. Always thinking and worrying. The world just felt too much and too overwhelming. Yet people were drawn to her because she provided a safe, calm place in her compassion and empathy.

On the surface she looked calm, capable, responsible, clever – a ‘good girl’ many would say. Yet underneath she felt like a fraud. Never enough, never fitting in, never meeting the standards that the world seemed to live by.

In later years, to cope, she started drinking – it quietened the noise. It made her brave. It helped her to fit in and be ‘normal’. She strictly watched what she ate to control her body as a weak substitute for trying to control her mind and emotions.

But she was deluding herself. She couldn’t control anything as her body appeared to fight back – to the point that she felt she had cottonwool between her ears and lived in a perpetual fog. Her limbs felt like she was wading through mud. Her foundations felt rocker and more unsteady than ever as dizziness became more frequent. Sleep evaded her despite her body wanting to do nothing else but sleep. She stopped feeling any joy. She couldn’t push herself anymore despite her once iron-clad will. Her body no longer listened or could be controlled.

The doctors told her it was stress. Then they told her it was depression. She knew it was possibly a little bit of both but also much more than either. She felt so frustrated and truly believed that this would be her life forever.

Do you know this person? Can you resonate?

She was me.

I also see here in the many clients that come to see me disconnected from life, desperate, powerless and ashamed. This is the person who has usually given up after trying everything the doctor and the internet prescribed. But I like to remind this person it’s not the end. It’s just the beginning of a whole new way of being.

I encourage a re-frame: Your body is not trying to stop or punish you. It’s actually protecting you in the most clever, inherent way.

The autonomic nervous system has an incredible process for self-preservation. When there’s been too much stress, too much trauma, too much overwhelm (including sensory and environmental) the body shuts down to preserve the precious energy that remains, to avoid constant stimulation and activation, all while waiting for the ‘all clear’ signal to come again.

Usually it doesn’t because this isn’t like a terrifying but once-off car accident or running from a fire. It’s the chronic day-to-day experience of living that has been endured,  unquestioned, since childhood. Until one final stressor tips the nervous system over the edge into shut down and self-preservation.

Many people sadly stay in freeze state for months to years. They also make it worse by trying to fix themselves in ways that feel even more threatening to the nervous system (e.g. detoxes, more exercise, fasting, judging themselves relentlessly).

When all we know is pushing ourselves, fixing ourselves, and trying to be perfect and in control it’s no wonder our nervous systems stay stuck.

For some of you perhaps that’s been years of debilitating fatigue. For others perhaps you’re on a rollercoaster of feeling pretty functional and other times crashing, but never returning to version of you from before.

Then there are those who are just plain tired of a disconnected, exhausting life of survival, hustle and overwhelm where you just KNOW that so much more is possible but you don’t know how to get there.

YES, so much more is possible and if you choose to work with your body -no matter where are right now, and learn to signal safety to your body, you can start to discover not your old normal (because that way of living is what you got you here in the first place!) but a far more connected, nourished, supported way of living.

Your body isn’t the enemy but your nudge towards transformation.

This year I want to support and empower as many of you as I am able to. I want you to know that you’re seen, you’re not alone, you’re enough and you’re far more powerful than you may believe right now.

One very potent way to begin this journey is to join me for the Rooted Retreat in February (women only) where I will support you to reset, reconnect, remember who you are and rise from there. With practical tools to take back out into the world. NOTE: there’s only 1 week left to receive the early bird discount.

Another way I can support you is through my 1:1 Fatigue to Flow Coaching. To discover if this is a good fit for you why not start with a jumpstart session to get clarity on where you are now and what you need going forward.

Otherwise, subscribe to my podcast or watch my videos and watch this space where I’ll be sharing some practical tips and tools this year and will continue to see and support you.

Yes, you are right….More is possible and you’re allowed to hope for it.

I’d love to share an invitation with you to a beautiful offering from someone who has profoundly influenced my life, Juliet Gaia Rose, and the Depths of Feminine Wisdom School. Beginning in June, she is offering a 9-month immersive journey called The Art of Feminine Creation & Facilitation. Over nearly two decades, Juliet has intricately woven the program's transmission, touching over 3000 women across 5 continents with her offerings of love. This program will ignite the fire of your soul and birth your divine feminine purpose. This is for women who have a deep calling and longing to serve the awakening of the Feminine Divine in the world through their own unique service, offerings and essence. This is an initiatory journey into the "art of creating and facilitating" from the sacred feminine in union with the sacred masculine and discovering a profoundly different and powerful way of showing up and serving, as well as impacting others. This nine-month journey is a birthing canal to hold you through the expansions and contractions, the pain and the joy of awakening to who you truly are and why you are here, and to sing your soul song in service to Humanity and the Earth. We women are here during these times to birth the new and to lead the way with love - When we open to Her moving through us with the devotion of the divine masculine and in alignment with our soul's truth, we become unstoppable. Find more details and how to apply for the program here and don't forget to sign up for the free introductory workshop on 4th June. WOMEN WHO ARE DRAWN TO THIS TRANSMISSION... This will be the fifth cycle of the program which has served many therapists, coaches, healers, intuitives, seers, body workers, medicine women, yoga teachers, artists, mystics, priestesses, tantricas, empaths, mothers. Many of these women go through the program a few times and each cycle the wisdom widens, deepens and heightens alongside one another in sisterhood. This program is for women who sense the awakening of the feminine; in her full radiance, wisdom, power and grace will contribute to embodied love, harmony and union in our world. This program is for women who would like to hold women's circles and for women who would like to bring the "Feminine Creation & Facilitation Keys" into their current creations and offerings. This program is also for women who are not necessarily called to hold women's circles, and are on a journey of more deeply discovering and birthing their soul song and wanting to be held in a container where they receive the transmission of "Creation & Facilitation from the Feminine". For authenticity sake - I'm an affiliate for Juliet which means I earn a percentage if one of you should choose to join her programme. However, please know I don't simply sign up to be an affiliate for anyone unless I can 100% vouch for them through personal experience. Quite simply, I wouldn't be where I am now if it hadn't been for Juliet's transmissions and shared wisdom. When the time was right an email like this dropped into my inbox and it spoke to me so profoundly that I signed up despite my fear and challenges around it. It changed not only how I work but also how I relate to myself and live my life! That's why I don't hesitate to share her programmes. Find more details and how to apply for the program HERE

Yesterday, I stepped into our tiny local library—a place that usually feels like a silent sanctuary for me. I’m sure you know what I mean - The smell of old paper, the hushed whispers, and a treasure-trove of stories waiting to be found? But, as I was renewing my annual membership with the elderly volunteer librarian the silence was shattered. A man walked in and began verbally abusing a second woman volunteering behind the counter. He didn't just shout; he swore at her, called her a liar and accused her of making up mental health issues. He revealed all her personal secrets with his horrendous insults. I watched the older librarian, visibly shaken, telling him to stop. He treated her request like a cockroach to be squashed. I felt how the air had left the room, we were all shutting down and becoming small. For a second, I felt my old, familiar "freeze" response. My brain tried to rationalize why I should stay quiet. But then, I caught myself. I saw my daughter just around the corner, I felt the rage of so many women being treated like this with no support and I couldn’t just keep quiet. So, I spoke up. I told him to stop. Even when he turned his contempt on me, asking, "What are you going to do about it?"—I didn't back down. I stayed rooted and told him it was not OK to speak to anyone like he was doing and to disrupt the peace. I pointed out how unsafe we were feeling. At one point he approached the woman behind the counter so I went behind there as well to stand beside her, afraid he'd hit her. And then afraid he'd hit me. Eventually, he left, leaving the poor women in tears and the rest of us very shaken. I took three important insights from this experience: Firstly, how our nervous system templates and trauma responses dictate our responses and impact our bodies. Maybe you’ve been there too? Perhaps you know exactly what it feels like to have your nervous system go into a total freeze when someone crosses a line? Maybe you fawned (tried to say something to appease the person) or you rationalised why it was OK? You and I both know how easy it is to shut down to stay safe. But what happens to your spirit when you keep yourself small for too long? It depletes you, doesn't it? It’s exhausting to feel powerless and frozen. Secondly, the old me wouldn’t just have stayed silent but also tried to "rescue" the poor woman with free therapy later (which she wouldn’t have necessarily asked for). I would have told myself I was doing it for her but I really would have done it to help the scared, powerless part of me that needed to be rescued. Instead, I gave her a hug and held the belief that she is strong and powerful and will know and take the steps she needs to when she’s ready Thirdly, when the other woman visiting the library joined me in confronting this man after I did, I remembered again how important it is to speak our truth to give others permission to do the same. And how powerful woman can be when we collaborate. I’ve NEVER seen myself as someone who speaks up and stands out. I spent my life shying away from that even if hurt me and I abandoned myself and my needs. But my journey through chronic fatigue and burnout taught me a hard truth: When you stay quiet to fit in and feel ‘safe’, you're actually betraying your own body. My symptoms forced me to take the time to hear what my body was telling me about not being in alignment with my truth, about keeping myself small, adapting myself to fit in and be safe (even if it depleted me), and about a nervous system that was chronically dysregulated resulting in a tendency to fawn, freeze and rescue in the past. How valuable would it be to finally trust your voice and feel powerful in your own skin, even when the world gets loud and crazy around you? This is why I created the Rooted community. It’s a sanctuary for women who are ready to regulate their nervous systems and reclaim their power. As you join the Rooted community, you’ll quickly begin to realize that you don’t have to stay small anymore. You’ll notice your vitality returning as you rewire your body and brain for ease and flow. I’ve opened the Rooted membership again for just three days. If you’re tired of feeling exhausted and alone, join us. I’ll provide the tools and the space; you bring your courage and willingness to step into the fullest version of you.
