I’m Not Depressed – I’m Just a Mother

A friend recently shared this article with me, written by an honest mother about her difficulties in the early stages of motherhood.

I wanted to share as I have often said how important it is to be honest as mothers and that way too few mothers are honest, possibly for fear of being pigeon-holed – just as Esther Walker experienced.

I posted a related article when I was in the throes of the daily demands of tiny babies. What I also pointed out is that yes, it might very well simply be sleep deprivation and physical depletion (I have read a number of similar articles that offer this view in place of depression) but there is also nothing wrong with reaching out to a professional someone to say “I am down/depleted/deprived and is there some way you can support me?” Support can come in many forms and why go through this difficult time alone?

After all, as Esther pointed out “The British Army would not allow its soldiers to exist for long periods under the sort of psychological trauma and sleep-deprivation that new mothers are expected to endure, unaided, cheerfully.”

So, why should new mothers have to? Especially new mothers….

Reach out and know that you are a mother and that fact, on its own, makes you amazing!
