Firstly, I want to say this: It’s too late to rest when you’re exhausted. You need to treat rest like a savings account and bank it regularly to save it up for that next rainy day. This way you’ll not crash as easily whenever the next period of increased stress comes.
Yes, it’s easier said than done.
There are so many reasons why we don’t rest when our bodies tell us to.
Here are a few:
1) We’ve learned to disconnect from our bodies for various reasons and then push beyond what we can manage. We don’t listen to our limits
2) We’ve been fed the narrative that we are more worthy when we are producing and achieving versus when we are resting
3) We can’t rest because our nervous systems are dysregulated and so, firstly, we don’t have a template for rest and secondly, it doesn’t feel safe to rest.
